Heavy music continues to be a dominant force in the global live entertainment industry. According to new data released by the concert trade publication Pollstar, rock and metal giants have secured top spots on the list of the “Most Popular Touring Artists Of The Millennium.”
The rankings are based on ticket sales reported from January 1, 2001, through the end of 2025. Metallica led the charge for the genre, landing at No. 8. The thrash legends have sold over 15.5 million tickets across 562 concerts during the 25-year period.
Close behind them is Bon Jovi, ranking at No. 9 with more than 13.9 million tickets sold over 587 shows. Guns N’ Roses also made a significant impact, coming in at No. 16 with 10.7 million tickets moved across 486 concerts. Meanwhile, British heavy metal icons Iron Maiden secured the No. 19 spot, having sold 10 million tickets over the course of 620 performances.
At the very top of the list, Coldplay claimed the No. 1 position with a staggering 24.8 million tickets sold. They were followed by U2 with 20.2 million and Ed Sheeran with 19.6 million.
This comprehensive chart serves as a preview for Pollstar‘s upcoming 2025 Year-End Special Issue, which is scheduled for publication on December 12.
Andy Gensler, the editor-in-chief of Pollstar, commented on the massive scale of the modern touring business.
“Congratulations to Coldplay, U2, Ed Sheeran, Dave Matthews Band and all the top 25 acts of the last 25 years as well as their teams, their fans, and this entire industry who work tirelessly to make these shows happen,” Gensler said. “It is staggering to consider the exponential growth this industry has undergone over the last quarter century with more superstar acts playing more shows in more territories than ever. This list is the perfect prelude to our 2025 Year End Special Issue in which touring continues to reach new creative and commercial heights across every genre.”
The industry will gather to discuss these trends at Pollstar Live!, which returns to the Loews Hollywood Hotel from April 14–16, 2026. The event will culminate with the 37th annual Pollstar Awards, honoring the artists and executives who defined the year in live music.
