Megadeth returned to the spotlight last Friday, November 14, with the release of “I Don’t Care,” a single from their upcoming self-titled album—the band’s announced final studio record. Guitarist and frontman Dave Mustaine described the album as the closing chapter of Megadeth’s legendary career, and this new track is giving fans a taste of what’s to come.
The single wasted no time making an impact. Forbes reports that “I Don’t Care” reached the number one spot on the US iTunes chart, temporarily surpassing Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.” For a short but memorable moment, Megadeth fans saw the band at the very top of one of the most competitive music charts in the world.
The achievement also put Megadeth ahead of other chart contenders, including Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” and K-pop act Demon Hunters’ “Golden.” While the single’s reign was brief—by Monday morning, November 17, it had slipped out of the top 100—the event highlights the enduring influence of the metal veterans, even after four decades of music and touring.
Mustaine previously said about new song: “How many times have you wanted to say this to someone? I know you want to! Deep down inside, if we had the balls, we would tell more people ‘I don’t care’ more often.”
“Part of the main riff in this track had been floating around in my head since we did [2022’s] The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!, so I was pumped to start recording ‘I Don’t Care’ for this LP,” he continued. “I really love the guitar nuances in the track. There is the main rhythm riff, next, a very deliberate down-picking part, next, the octave chords with jump picking on octave notes (while still down-picking!). And the soloing and back and forth between me and Teemu [Mäntysaari] is magnificent!!”
“I Don’t Care” will be featured on Megadeth’s final studio album, Megadeth, which is slated for release on January 23, 2026, via Dave Mustaine’s Tradecraft imprint under Frontiers Label Group’s BLKIIBLK label. Fans can expect the record to deliver the signature aggression and precision that have defined the band throughout their career.
