Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine has officially announced the upcoming release of his latest autobiographical work, “In My Darkest Hour.” Scheduled to hit shelves on September 8, 2026, the book will be published under Grand Central Publishing‘s recently revived music-centric imprint, Da Capo. The memoir provides a deeply personal look into the vocalist and guitarist’s grueling fight against squamous cell carcinoma, a throat cancer diagnosis he publicly revealed in 2019.

Billed by the publishing house as a “powerful reflection on the harsh truths and raw realizations that can only come from confronting death,” the upcoming release promises to transcend the typical illness narrative. Providing a statement exclusively obtained by Rolling Stone, the legendary musician opened up about the profound physical and emotional toll of his battle and recovery.

“One of the most harrowing experiences of my adult life has been my seven-year journey through cancer treatment and onward into remission,” Mustaine said. “This story is considerably more than just, ‘Go to the doctor, get diagnosed, get treatment and hopefully I live happily ever after.’ This was a journey of me saving myself, staying alive, keeping my family together, and continuing to make music through it all.”

The book’s publisher, Da Capo, has a storied history in the literary world. Originally operating as Da Capo Press, it was acquired by Hachette Book Group in 2016 during their buyout of the Perseus Book Group. Although the imprint was temporarily dissolved in 2024 amid corporate restructuring, it has now been fully resurrected to focus exclusively on music-related literature.

Speaking on the emotional depth of the forthcoming autobiography, Da Capo executive editor Ben Schafer praised the heavy metal pioneer’s willingness to bare his soul.

“’In My Darkest Hour‘ is Dave Mustaine at his most revealing, vulnerable, and true,” said Ben Schafer. “With lacerating honesty and soulful reflection, he speaks to the universal human experience of facing serious illness and how it changes a person, their family and friends, and one’s relationship with creativity.”

To properly document his extensive medical journey, the frontman re-teamed with established New York Times journalist Joe Layden. The pair previously worked together to co-author the musician’s 2010 release, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir.” Adding to his extensive rock literature resume, Joe Layden is also known for collaborating with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley on “No Regrets: A Rock ‘N’ Roll Memoir,” as well as penning “The Last Great Fight,” a deep dive into the legendary 1990 boxing match where James “Buster” Douglas scored a historic knockout victory over Mike Tyson.

According to promotional materials released by the imprint, the narrative provides an intimate look at how the singer managed to balance life-saving medical procedures with his unrelenting drive to create music. As noted by Da Capo, “In My Darkest Hour” “takes readers from the treatment room to the studio as Mustaine chronicles how his diagnosis inspired him to take up the pen and guitar pick, going from radiation and chemotherapy appointments straight into hours-long recording sessions, resulting in Megadeth’s sixteenth studio album, The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead!

Ultimately, the memoir highlights how staring down a life-threatening illness fundamentally shifted the frontman’s perspective on existence and art. Concluding their overview of the project, the publisher emphasized the overarching theme of resilience.

“For Mustaine, it was one more opportunity to fight like hell,” the synopsis reads. “Along the way, Mustaine details how confronting his own mortality brought him closer to his family, taught him how to ask for help, strengthened his faith, and challenged the vulnerability of his art.”
