The long goodbye for Megadeth has officially begun with the release of their powerful new single, “Tipping Point.“ The track, released today, is the first music to be unveiled from the thrash metal icons’ seventeenth and final studio album. An accidental online retail leak has suggested the forthcoming album will be self-titled, simply named Megadeth, and is scheduled for a January 2026 release.
The new single arrived on Friday, October 3, with an official music video and full pre-order details for the album expected to be announced later today. The release is the first concrete step in the band’s announced farewell, which frontman Dave Mustaine confirmed in an emotional statement back in August. In that message, he explained his decision to end the band’s legendary four-decade recording career and asked fans to celebrate the final chapter with him.
“There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career… Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now,” Mustaine said. “I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans, and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.”
He continued: “We can’t wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour… This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it’s our last studio album… Don’t be mad, don’t be sad — be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.”
According to the brief online leak from Rough Trade Records earlier this week, the final album, Megadeth, will be released on January 22 or 23, 2026.
The release of “Tipping Point” marks a bittersweet but exciting moment for Megadeth fans. It is the first tangible piece of the band’s final artistic statement, kicking off a final chapter that will include the new album, a new memoir from Mustaine, and a massive global farewell tour in 2026.
