Maynard James Keenan has had hip replacement surgery and says all 27 of his autumn shows will go ahead.
Maynard James Keenan went in for a hip replacement on Wednesday, and has made clear that none of the 27 concerts he is booked to play between September and Christmas are in doubt. The 62-year-old singer, who fronts Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, said his left hip gave out without warning in Luxembourg on 3 July, midway through A Perfect Circle‘s European tour, and that he finished the run on a cane.
Keenan wrote on social media:
“Don’t be Lazy. Read the Whole Post. July 3rd, woke up Luxembourg on tour w @aperfectcircle. When I went to do my morning workout & hike, my left hip said No. Out of nowhere it just decided to not work. Had to finish the rest of the tour in pain w a cane. Followed by the frantic phone calls & emails to get to the bottom of it. Labrum Tear? Hip replacement? Sprain? I needed answers fast because I have s**t to do. Many tours. Starting in Sep & all the way to Xmas, I’ll be performing roughly 27 shows in 18 different countries with 3 different bands.”

This is his second hip replacement, but not a repeat of the first. Keenan had his right hip replaced in June 2015, putting it down at the time to years of stomping around stages having left him with no cushion in the joint. He was 51, had just been given his purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and said he expected to be back on the mat in twelve weeks. He reached black belt in 2024.
He had four days of margin on this one. His own cut-off for going ahead was 1 September, based on how long recovery would take before the touring starts.
The schedule he is protecting is unusually dense even by his standards. A Perfect Circle‘s European run this summer was their first headline touring since 2018, and the Australian dates in December will be their first there since 2013, with New Zealand shows following a 22-year gap. Puscifer are out behind Normal Isn’t, their fifth album, released in February.
