Mastodon have finally lifted the lid on their long-awaited new studio album. Marrow Deep arrives August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings, and the Atlanta progressive metal veterans have marked the announcement with a fresh single, “Snakes For Dinner“, featuring a guest vocal turn from Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.

The track lands with its own music video and serves as the second taste of the record, following last month’s “Your Ghost Again — a song that struck a nerve with fans and landed at No. 2 in Revolver magazine’s readers’ poll of the best songs of 2026 so far. For Homme, the appearance is his first on a Mastodon recording since he lent his voice to “Colony Of Birchmen” on the band’s acclaimed 2006 album Blood Mountain. Built on heavy riffs and soaring melodies, “Snakes For Dinner” digs into grief, remembrance and the act of moving forward — themes that run through the heart of Marrow Deep.

Coming five years after 2021’s Hushed And Grim, the album finds founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher stepping into a new chapter after a stretch defined by personal loss and upheaval. Drawing on the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile threads linking life, loss and destiny, the band has channeled those experiences into what it calls some of its most adventurous and emotionally resonant work yet.

The record is also a milestone in the band’s history as the first full-length Mastodon album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, who stepped in following the death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds, with keyboardist João Nogueira contributing throughout. The band has teased a substantial roster of guest musicians still to be revealed.

The announcement follows the band’s recent short film “The Mastodon In The Room“, which documents the three founding members processing the grief around Hinds‘ passing while looking back on their 25-year history and honestly confronting the circumstances that led to the guitarist’s departure — five months before his death in a motorcycle accident.

Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders spoke to the renewed spark within the group. He said: “BillBrann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”

Behind the boards, Marrow Deep was co-produced by Mastodon at their own West End Sound studio in Atlanta alongside Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High On Fire, Converge), with mixing handled by Andrew Scheps, whose résumé includes Adele, Black Sabbath and Metallica. The band will support the album on the fall “The Poisonous Weapons Tour,” a North American run with Deafheaven and Alcest in support, kicking off September 16 in Orlando.
