Mastodon have issued a statement on Marrow Deep, their first album since Brent Hinds‘ death.
Mastodon have released Marrow Deep and written to their audience about what making it cost them. The album was released yesterday through Loma Vista Recordings, their first since Brent Hinds left the band in March 2025 and died five months later.
The band wrote:

“It was a turbulent ride getting here and while we’re no strangers to exploring heavy subject matter, this one hit differently. All we had known as a band had dramatically changed forever, as we all found ourselves navigating personal tragedies and catastrophic events.”
“This album was forged in a whole lot of chaos and raw, unfiltered emotion, but through the uncertainty, we managed to come together, unpack the weight of it all and create something beautiful that pushed us to our absolute limits, collectively and individually, as creatives, musicians and human beings.”
“For us, Marrow Deep is more than just a snapshot of time, it’s a testament to perserverance and the importance of getting out of bed and showing up, even when you feel like the world is crumbling around you.”
“The three of us have poured everything we have into Mastodon for the past 26+ years, it’s an insatiable fire that burns within us still to this very day. The phrase about chaos is not rhetorical. Mastodon went into the studio to record Marrow Deep roughly a week after Hinds died in a motorcycle collision in August 2025. Drummer Brann Dailor had also lost his mother in February of that year.
“Your Ghost Again“, the first song they released from the album back in June, is directly about Hinds. Dailor said at the time that his portion of it was all about him and for him.
The band’s remark about heavy subject matter carries a long history. Hushed And Grim, their last album, was written after the death of their manager Nick John in 2018. Once More ‘Round The Sun followed the death of Bill Kelliher‘s mother, and The Hunter was named for Hinds‘ brother, who died while the band were making it.
“The three of us” in the statement refers to Dailor, Kelliher and bassist Troy Sanders, who have been together since 2000. Nick Johnston and João Nogueira are now full members, making this the first Mastodon album recorded as a five-piece.
Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou produced, with Andrew Scheps mixing. Ballou‘s Converge bandmate Ben Koller plays drums on the opener, “Barbarians Blood“, one of several guest appearances alongside Josh Homme, Randy Blythe, Neil Fallon, Joe Duplantier, Nate Newton and Geezer Butler.

The “Poisonous Weapons Tour” opens on September 16 at Hard Rock Live in Orlando and finishes on October 24 at Sick New World Dallas, with Deafheaven and Alcest supporting throughout.
