A 45-year-old man has been charged with theft in connection with the removal of floral tributes from the public memorial for the late Ozzy Osbourne in Birmingham, an act that has drawn condemnation for violating a space that had become a sacred focal point for thousands of grieving fans and the Osbourne family.

West Midlands Police confirmed that Parviz Jafari, 45, was arrested on August 2 following reports of a theft at the Black Sabbath bench on Broad Street, according to BBC. He has now been officially charged and is scheduled to appear before magistrates on September 3.

The theft is seen by many as a deep desecration of a communal space for mourning. Following Osbourne‘s death on July 22, the Black Sabbath bench was transformed into a “place of pilgrimage,” with thousands of fans from around the world leaving flowers, handwritten notes, and personal mementos.

The site’s significance was powerfully underscored during the public funeral procession for Osbourne on July 30. In one of the day’s most emotional moments, his wife, Sharon Osbourne, and their children, Jack and Kelly, paused their cortege at that exact spot to view the sea of tributes and add their own flowers, a moment described as “a gift from the fans back to Ozzy.”

The outpouring of public support has been a source of immense comfort for the grieving family. In a recent public statement, Kelly Osbourne thanked fans, writing: “The love, support, and beautiful messages I’ve received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life.”

Jack Osbourne shared a similar sentiment in his own tribute. “He was so many things to so many people, but I was lucky and blessed to be part of a very small group who got to call him ‘Dad,'” he wrote. “My heart is heavy with sadness and sorrow, but also full of love and gratitude.”

In the days following the theft, Birmingham City Council has continued its work to respectfully collect the thousands of tributes left at the bench. The items are being carefully catalogued and will be preserved for the Osbourne family. While the criminal act has saddened the community, the overwhelming outpouring of love and the official efforts to preserve the tributes ensure that the memorial’s true spirit of respect and admiration for the “Prince of Darkness” will endure.
