Wolfgang Van Halen, the multi-instrumentalist mastermind behind Mammoth (formerly Mammoth WVH), offered crucial advice to aspiring musicians during a recent radio appearance, warning them to be vigilant with the business side of the industry.
In a conversation on the November 23 episode of Whiplash, the KLOS radio show hosted by Full Metal Jackie, the 34-year-old rocker emphasized the importance of legal literacy for new artists trying to maintain control over their careers.
“I guess the one piece of advice I would make sure to reiterate is read every single contract that is put in front of you before you sign it,” Van Halen stressed (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “Read the whole thing and understand every word that’s being presented to you before you sign it. That’s one of the most important things, for sure.”
While Van Halen acknowledged that the “scary” business aspects can be daunting, he noted that a genuine passion for creation is the ultimate survival tool.
“I think at the end of the day, the thing that matters the most is that you enjoy the music and enjoy the playing and the creating of the music, because if your love for that overrides everything, you’ll be able to make it because that’s what counts the most.”
Beyond legal advice, the interview touched on the lessons Van Halen has absorbed while sharing stages with industry titans. having toured with legends like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Creed, he observed that the most successful acts often share a common trait: kindness.
“Maybe not so much stage production, but I think just the way that we’ve been treated,” he said when asked what he learned from the giants of rock. “We’ve been treated so kindly by all of these incredibly historic artists, and I think it’s just so important that no matter what position you’re in, to just be nice.”
He specifically highlighted his experience with thrash icons Metallica as a model for professional conduct.
“When Metallica just treats you so wonderfully and when every member comes to the dressing room to just say ‘hey’ and give you a hug and just be nice guys, that’s really fr*cking cool.”
For Van Halen, who handles all instrumentation and vocals on Mammoth‘s studio recordings, fostering a positive environment on the road is essential for survival.
“It’s, like, touring, it’s tough. You’re away from family, you’re sleeping on a bus… And so when you foster a positive environment, it’s a pretty fresh thing to be able to be in.”
