Malevolent Creation’s Phil Fasciana is hospitalized in France with bacterial pneumonia; band reports positive signs of recovery after critical condition.

Phil Fasciana, the guitarist and founding member of the long-running Florida death metal band Malevolent Creation, is currently hospitalized in Montpelier, France, battling a severe case of bacterial pneumonia. The band has provided an update on his condition, noting positive signs of improvement after a critical period.

Earlier yesterday, Malevolent Creation drummer Ronnie Parmer, bassist and lead vocalist Jesse Jolly, and guitarist Chris Cannella released a statement regarding Fasciana‘s health. They revealed that upon his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Fasciana was placed in an induced coma. This measure was taken to minimize strain on his cardiovascular system during intravenous treatment. The statement indicates Fasciana has shown improvement, with doctors expressing positivity as the infection is nearly cleared. He is gradually being taken off breathing assistance and is reportedly responding to his name, though his full recovery is ongoing. He is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week.

The statement reads: “There is positive news to share regarding Phil‘s condition. However, to understand the gravity of the situation, we need to be fully transparent with the fact that when Phil was admitted to the ICU, he was placed in an induced coma to avoid any intense strain on his cardiovascular system during his intravenous treatment. Phil has shown improvement, and the doctors are remaining positive based on signs of his recovery, as his infection has almost cleared up! He is slowly being taken off of breathing assistance, and he is responding to his name as they attempt to communicate with him, but he is not out of the woods just yet. He will likely be in the hospital for another week, at least, but his overall condition is improving.”

The band members expressed profound gratitude for the ongoing support directed towards Fasciana‘s recovery, stating, “We cannot express enough how much his family, friends, and we as his brothers-in-arms appreciate the continuing thoughts, hopes and prayers directed towards his recovery. We will do our best to provide timely updates as they become available and appropriate, based on further developments. Horns high, for you, Phil. We love you.”

This medical emergency occurred amidst Malevolent Creation’s ongoing European tour, forcing Fasciana to withdraw from all upcoming performances. The remaining members — Ronnie Parmer, Jesse Jolly, and Chris Cannella — are continuing the tour as a trio, having begun with their show on Thursday, July 17, at Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Spain.

Fasciana’s hospitalization began on Thursday night, July 16, when he was rushed to the ICU in Montpelier. At that time, his condition was described as critical, with concerns that the bacterial pneumonia may have spread to surrounding organs. The band’s initial statement conveyed the gravity of the situation: “Dear Malevolent fans, far and wide: It is with immense sadness that we report our helmsman Phillip Fasciana was admitted to the ICU in Montpelier, France last night. He developed what the doctors deemed to be a severe case of bacterial pneumonia, which may have spread to surrounding organs. He has been listed as being in critical condition. His family has been notified and will be deciding on next steps, based on what is best for Phil‘s condition and overall health.”

The band continued: “We are all crushed to see him in this situation, and it is absolutely life-threatening. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers, and hope for a full recovery. It is with the support and direction of his immediate family that we will finish the remainder of the tour in Phil‘s absence, as he needs to focus on his recovery.”

Phil Fasciana is the sole remaining original member of Malevolent Creation, a band he co-founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1986 before relocating to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For nearly four decades, he has been the primary creative force behind the band’s distinctive sound, navigating numerous lineup changes and maintaining their status as a prominent name in death metal.
