Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn celebrated his 58th birthday in spectacular fashion, hosting a special all-star concert in Athens where he jammed on classic metal covers with a host of talented Greek musicians. The event, held on Friday, July 18, at the Gazarte venue, was described by Flynn as an “incredibly special night” that fulfilled a personal dream. You can watch the footage down below.
Taking a break from Machine Head‘s current European tour, Flynn marked the eve of his birthday by performing a set of beloved tracks from metal legends like Metallica, Slayer, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. He was backed by an impressive lineup of local talent, including members of Greek bands Scar of the Sun, Acid Rain, and The Silent Wedding, with guest appearances from Vageliss Karzis of Wolfheart and Seth Siro Anton of the iconic Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh.
In a statement posted after the show, Flynn was effusive in his praise for the experience and the musicians who joined him. “My Bday Bash last night in Athens was absolutely mind blowing. I’m still processing it all,” he wrote. “Such an absolutely jaw droppingly amazing crowd, it really was an incredibly special night. Much love Athens.”
He gave special credit to the local collaborators. “Wanna give a massive shout out to the band members who jammed with me, everybody’s brought their A-game, and came in so prepared and so well-versed and flexible, it really was an absolute pleasure jamming with all of these fine gentlemen.”
Flynn also revealed that the entire event was a personal passion project brought to life by a local organizer. “This whole crazy dream of mine of having a birthday bash in Athens Greece would not have been possible without the hard work, massive effort, and organizational mastermind of this dude,” he wrote, thanking his friend Simos for making it happen.
The celebration was such a success that Flynn is already considering making it a new tradition. He ended his post by asking fans, “Should we do this again next year? Maybe in a different city?”
