Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale, celebrated for her powerful and gritty vocal delivery, recently detailed how she maintains her instrument on the road. In a new interview with Guitar World, Hale explained that her routine has evolved from a rigid regimen in her 20s to a more intuitive approach in her 40s.

“A lot of it is just… I’ve been doing it for such a long time. You end up really being in tune and listening to your own body,” Hale said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “So every day you’re, like, ‘Okay, how do I feel? What do I need to work out today?’”

She explained that her old 30-minute warm-up is gone, replaced by “a lot of dumb stuff.” This includes the “hardest thing,” getting enough sleep, and extreme hydration. “I waterboard myself every day,” she joked. “It’s seven to… 10 bottles of water… before we go on stage.”

Hale emphasized that her aggressive-sounding technique is safe, though it often worries her own family.

“I always have to reassure people… They’re, like, ‘I don’t know. You did this scream thing. We’re worried about you,’” she said. “I’m, like, ‘It’s okay. It sounds like I’m gargling razor blades, but I’m not.’”

Hale credits her durable technique and confidence to a foundational education she received at age 16 from an unexpected source: Steve Whiteman, the frontman for the 1980s band Kix.

Hale recounted meeting Whiteman when Halestorm opened for his side project, Funny Money, at a Pennsylvania biker bar.

“We were sharing this tiny closet of a dressing room,” Hale recalled. “And he was doing these kind of like vocal acrobatics in a towel… And me being the curious teenager, I’m, like, ‘What are you doing?’”

After learning he was warming up, Whiteman invited her to the music store where he taught lessons.

“So I went down that Tuesday and then I ended up continuing with him and he taught me everything he knows,” Hale said. “I walked out of my lessons with him a completely different person. I had a confidence, a foundation. I’ve dabbled with other vocal teachers since then, but I really haven’t done anything that has strayed from what he taught me.”

Halestorm is currently supporting their latest studio album, Everest, which was released in August on Atlantic Records.
