During a concert in Istanbul, Turkey, on August 17, Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst took matters into his own hands by disabling a rogue drone hovering above the stage. The band was in the middle of a 14-song set at the Atakoy Marina when the incident occurred.
Midway through their performance of “Take a Look Around,” Durst noticed several drones flying over the audience. He gestured for one of them to come closer, and when it was within range, he swung his microphone, striking the drone and sending it to the ground. He then instructed security to toss the broken drone into the crowd.
The incident was captured by fans on video and has been circulating online. The irony of the moment, with a drone’s view being interrupted during a song titled “Take a Look Around,” was not lost on observers. Some fans noted that Durst could have easily saved the moment for one of the two performances of the band’s signature track, “Break Stuff.“
The show was not without other notable moments. Durst also joked with the audience, claiming that actor Tom Cruise had flown in to attend the concert but was too shy to join the band on stage. This was a nod to the song’s inclusion on the “Mission: Impossible 2” soundtrack.
However, the concert also had a serious undertone. At one point, Durst told the crowd that the show might be the last time the Turkish government would allow the band to perform in the country, though he did not provide any further details.
The bold move by Durst has been compared to a past, less successful, attempt by Mike Patton to knock down a drone during a performance. Durst’s action, however, was a success, adding another memorable moment to the band’s live shows.
