Les Claypool officially kicked off his highly anticipated “Claypool Gold” marathon tour on Wednesday, May 20, taking over the Reno Events Centre in Reno, Nevada. The ambitious live format sees the legendary bassist pulling triple duty, fronting three of his distinct musical projects in a single night: Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade.
The opening night of the massive run delivered several major surprises for the audience, including a slate of live debuts pulled from recent releases. Fans were treated to fresh material from the latest Primus EP, A Handful Of Nuggs, alongside brand-new cuts from The Claypool Lennon Delirium‘s recently released studio album, The Great Parrot-Ox And The Golden Egg Of Empathy.
The Reno performance also featured a massive setlist rarity. During the Primus segment of the evening, the band dusted off “Hellbound 17 1/2 (Theme From)“. The track, originally featured on the classic album Tales From The Punchbowl, had not been performed live by the group since October 2012.
While still finding its structural footing on opening night, the ambitious, multi-band format bears a strong resemblance to the recent “Sessanta” tours spearheaded by Maynard James Keenan, which similarly featured the frontman rotating between multiple of his own bands throughout a single evening.
The “Claypool Gold” tour resumes tonight, May 22, in Bend, Oregon.
