Lamb of God, the esteemed metal powerhouse from Richmond, Virginia, has officially released the studio version of their powerful cover of Black Sabbath’s iconic 1971 track, “Children of the Grave.” The release follows the band’s live debut of their rendition at the star-studded “Back To The Beginning” event on July 5th, held in Black Sabbath’s hometown of Birmingham, UK.
The momentous “Back To The Beginning” concert, which served as a final farewell to Ozzy Osbourne and the original Sabbath lineup, featured an impressive roster of bands including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, and Mastodon. Lamb of God’s participation, and their choice to honor Sabbath with this particular cover, underscores their deep respect for the genre’s architects.
Guitarist Mark Morton articulated the profound significance of this tribute, stating: “Lamb of God being invited to perform with Black Sabbath at their final show is one of the greatest honors of our career. As an offering to the celebration, we’ve recorded our take on their classic ‘Children of the Grave,’ a protest song with lyrics that are as relevant today as they were in 1971 when the original was released.”
Morton further emphasized Black Sabbath‘s enduring legacy: “Black Sabbath invented heavy metal and in doing so, they changed the world. This genre that they created brings immeasurable joy to fans all over the world. We are so grateful to have the heavy metal community to call our home, and so grateful to Black Sabbath for the gift of their music that they’ve given to all of us.”
Beyond this impactful tribute, Lamb of God is nearing completion of their tenth studio album, which is set to follow their critically acclaimed 2022 release, Omens. The prior album notably secured the band’s sixth consecutive Top 15 debut on the Billboard 200, alongside a #1 position on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart.
Demonstrating their continued prowess, Lamb of God has maintained a formidable live presence. Following the release of Omens, the band embarked on sold-out headlining tours across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, opened for Pantera, and co-headlined a successful North American tour with Mastodon.
