The 50th anniversary of Judas Priest‘s groundbreaking sophomore album, Sad Wings Of Destiny, has officially arrived. Marking five decades since its original March 1976 release (March 23 in the U.K. and March 26 in the U.S.), the landmark record is universally celebrated as a foundational pillar of the heavy metal genre.
To honor the historic milestone, Exciter Records, alongside its publishing affiliate Reach Music and Judas Priest, has announced the upcoming release of highly anticipated 50th-anniversary special editions. This massive archival project was made possible after the partnership successfully acquired the album’s master rights, finally returning creative control of the foundational work to the band.
Reflecting on the album’s enduring legacy, Judas Priest issued a collective statement regarding the upcoming reissues.
“Sad Wings Of Destiny was a defining moment for us as a band. It’s where we really began to shape the sound and identity that would carry through everything we’ve done since. To see it recognized 50 years on — and to have it presented in new editions — is incredibly meaningful.”
By returning to the untouched original multitrack and master tapes, the reissues will feature newly remixed and remastered versions of the album, boasting unprecedented sonic depth, clarity, and fidelity. This meticulous restoration mirrors the successful approach taken for the recent 50th-anniversary celebration of their debut, Rocka Rolla. Audiophile-quality vinyl pressings of the original mix will also be made available for traditional purists.
Exciter Records president Michael Closter shared his enthusiasm for the project.
“We’ve returned to the original master tapes for Sad Wings Of Destiny — untouched for decades — and we’re excited and honored to bring these definitive editions to fans worldwide.”

Armed with a fierce twin-guitar attack, soaring vocals, and dark, progressive songwriting, the record birthed timeless genre staples like “Victim Of Changes“, “The Ripper“, “Tyrant“, and “Dreamer Deceiver“.
