Speculation about a possible reunion between Steve Perry and Journey has been a recurring theme for years — but according to Jonathan Cain, one recent wave of rumors was no accident.
The keyboardist has now admitted that his mid-February comments suggesting Perry might appear during the band’s “Final Frontier” farewell tour were intentionally misleading. At the time, speaking with Ultimate Classic Rock, Cain hinted at a possible guest appearance, saying: “Neal already asked, and he says [Perry‘s] thinking about it. I hope he comes out. It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them.”
Those remarks quickly spread among fans and media, fueling hopes that the classic-era lineup might share a stage once again. However, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Cain revealed there was a specific reason behind the claim.
“I just kind of planted a little seed out,” Cain said. “I was trying to fish a little bit, and say, ‘Well, he’s thinking about it.’ He came immediately out and said, ‘No, I’m not.’ I kind of did that on purpose, because there’s just so much fake AI stuff going on. You just look at it and go, ‘Wait a minute, no, that’s not true. None of this is true.'”
As expected, Perry wasted no time addressing the speculation. Just hours after Cain’s initial comments made headlines, the singer issued a statement directly to fans, firmly denying any involvement in the tour: “To all my friends – I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly. While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for JOURNEY, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest,” he said.
“I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too. But I’m continuing to explore new creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.
“Thank you for your continued support throughout the years. Your loyalty has never gone unnoticed, and I am forever humbly grateful.
“Sincerely, Steve Perry”.
While fans continue to hold out hope, a full reunion appears unlikely. Perry has only rarely appeared alongside Journey in recent decades, including their 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — where he joined the band onstage but did not perform.
Meanwhile, Journey’s farewell run presses on, with the “Final Frontier” tour spanning North America through the summer.
