Longtime Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has shared insights into the band’s ongoing “Final Frontier” North American tour, signaling that his time with the legendary rock group is drawing to a close. Speaking on the latest episode of the “Rock & Roll High School” podcast hosted by music executive Pete Ganbarg, Cain opened up about the intensive demands of the farewell trek and his decision to step away.
The “Final Frontier” tour, which originally launched on February 28 in Hershey, Pennsylvania, was announced last year as a heartfelt goodbye to the band’s multi-generational fan base. The touring lineup features Cain alongside founding guitarist Neal Schon, lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, keyboardist and vocalist Jason Derlatka, drummer and vocalist Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen.
When asked about the progression of the tour so far, Cain detailed the grueling nature of their current “evening with” format, which features over two hours of music each night without an opening act:
“It’s a grind. This is a ‘one off, two on, one off, two on,’ so there’s a lot of that. And so you’re getting consumed getting to the gig, and then playing the gig, and then… When we have four shows in a week, it’s pretty grueling. And we’re doing ‘evening with’, so it’s two hours and 15 minutes every night… There’s no support [act], no. So it makes it doubly hard for Arnel.”
When asked whether he still enjoys performing these songs live, Jonathan said:
“I do. I think it’s the only thing, the only reason I’m still out here is the fans. It’s time — it’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me. We’re 45 [years together with me as a member of Journey] this year. I’m so honored to celebrate 45.”
Reflecting on his long career, the keyboardist explained that the band’s massive co-headlining stadium run with Def Leppard last year felt like a natural pinnacle, making it the right moment to conclude his chapter with the group.
“After playing the stadium tour with Def Leppard last year, I just felt like we’ve done it,” he continued. “And we’re just repeating ourselves. The new albums don’t seem to move the needle. That’s why I’ve gotten into Christian music, because I can still sing a melody there and praise the Lord, and it still gets received… I’m leaving something behind, and I get to express my melodic and spiritual self there. So it’s a good place for me to be right now.”
Outside of his work with Journey, Cain is a devout born-again Christian. His wife, minister Paula White-Cain, made history as the first female clergy member to pray at a presidential inauguration during Donald Trump‘s first term in January 2017, and she continues to serve as a prominent spiritual adviser and head of the White House Faith Office following U.S. President Donald Trump‘s latest election victory.
Despite the demanding schedule, Journey fans will have ample opportunity to see the band before the curtain falls. Earlier this month, the group extended the “Final Frontier” tour by adding 40 additional North American dates for the autumn season.
Presented by AEG Presents, the newly scheduled fall leg is set to begin on Saturday, September 12 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The band will continue performing their hit-heavy setlist across the continent before wrapping up the entire tour with a special hometown finale on Saturday, November 28 at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Night after night, the performances continue to draw packed arenas as the band delivers timeless classics such as “Don’t Stop Believin’“, “Any Way You Want It“, “Faithfully“, and “Lights“.
