Journey Guitarist Neal Schon Denies Forcing Frontman Arnel Pineda Onto Farewell Tour

Journey guitarist and founding member Neal Schon has officially responded to recent allegations suggesting that lead vocalist Arnel Pineda was forced against his will to participate in the band’s ongoing farewell tour.

The controversy ignited after the frontman, who joined the legendary rock group in 2007 at the age of 40, revealed that he attempted to step away from the band twice before their “Final Frontier” tour launched in late February. Arnel Pineda cited intense vocal struggles, specifically when performing in cold outdoor environments, as well as severe personal turmoil. The singer recently opened up about his grueling divorce proceedings, which include explosive allegations of domestic ab*se.

According to the vocalist, he went as far as drafting a formal resignation letter but was met with complete silence from the band’s camp.

“If you’re planning to do a farewell tour, you better tell me, because my issues and my personal problems are getting more intense and I don’t know if I want to go with you,” Arnel Pineda recalled telling the group.

“As they say, silence can be louder than explaining,” he added. “I said to them I wanted to retire because of my personal problems. No answer. Obviously, they don’t want to find another singer.”

The frontman entirely skipped pre-tour rehearsals and claimed he only discovered the initial plans for a demanding two-set show format after returning from his native Philippines. Feeling trapped in his position, he bluntly noted: “They can fire me any time they want, but they’re not.”

While Arnel Pineda clearly felt he had no choice but to hit the road, Neal Schon maintains that the situation was dictated by legal constraints rather than personal demands. Reports indicate that Journey‘s live contract with touring giant AEG explicitly mandates that the tour can only proceed with Arnel Pineda on vocals.

To help alleviate the immense pressure on the singer, the band has made significant compromises to their live show. The group dropped their planned intermission and heavily diversified their setlists. During recent concerts, other members of the band have taken over lead vocal duties for a total of six songs per night, recently expanding to cover four of the first ten tracks to give the frontman a break.

The band currently has 60 confirmed U.S. dates for 2026, with an estimated 40 additional shows expected to be announced for 2027.

Addressing the drama, Neal Schon released a carefully worded public statement denying that he personally prevented his bandmate from leaving, instead pointing to the strict contractual obligations tying the group together.

Neal Schon‘s full statement is below:

“Over the years, Journey has always been about the music and the fans first.”

“There’s been some recent press and speculation that doesn’t reflect the full picture. Touring at this level involves many moving parts, and decisions are made collectively with our team, including management, agents, and promoters.”

“Like any long-running band, there are moments where people feel the pressure differently. I respect that, and I have nothing but appreciation for what everyone brings to the stage.”

“For clarity, no one was ever prevented by me from making their own personal decisions. At the same time, we were all advised by our representatives that there are contractual obligations tied to touring that need to be honored.”

“My focus has always been — and remains — delivering the best possible experience for our fans and keeping the music alive.”
