Josh Freese Announces Temporary Reunion With Weezer For South American Tour

In another high-profile move for the in-demand drummer, Josh Freese has confirmed he is rejoining Weezer for their upcoming South American tour. This marks a significant reunion for Freese and the band, as he previously served as their touring drummer from 2007 to 2012.

Freese will be stepping in to allow founding drummer Patrick Wilson to move to guitar duties for the duration of the trek. The veteran drummer announced the news on Instagram, posting a photo of a drum kit with the iconic Weezer logo.

“Getting ready to head down to South America with some old friends,” Freese wrote in the caption, later adding he was “looking forward to South America with Weezer coming up.”

The tour kicks off on November 2 in São Paulo, with further dates in Buenos Aires and Santiago, followed by festival appearances in Mexico.

This Weezer run is the latest chapter in a whirlwind year for Freese, who has become one of the most talked-about musicians in rock. In May, Freese concluded his tenure with the Foo Fighters, a role he stepped into in 2023 following the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins.

Shortly after, Freese made a celebrated return to another one of his most acclaimed former bands: Nine Inch Nails. Freese, who originally played with NIN from 2005 to 2008, has been back on the road with Trent Reznor and company, with a full North American tour scheduled for early 2026.

Freese shared a heartfelt message about his return to NIN in July, explaining his 2008 departure and his excitement to be back.

“Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Freese wrote at the time. “NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, ‘That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it.’ … Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew—helping them do what they do best night after night—is something I’m incredibly excited about.”

This Weezer tour appears to be a perfect fit, allowing Freese to reunite with “old friends” while making the most of his downtime before Nine Inch Nails ramps back up.
