Bon Jovi brought their Madison Square Garden show to an early close on Thursday night after frontman Jon Bon Jovi told the crowd he could not carry on, revealing he had been fighting a sinus infection.
The singer got through 14 songs — among them “You Give Love A Bad Name” and “It’s My Life” — before stopping around 90 minutes in. It was the eighth night of a nine-show run at the venue, with the finale still to come on Sunday, July 26.
Bon Jovi did not hide that he was struggling as the set went on, telling the room at one point that he was hurting. Before what became the closing number, “Livin’ On A Prayer“, he leveled with the audience.
“I know I’m letting you down and it’s not like me to do that,” he said, asking the crowd to help him through the song.
When he stopped for good, he tried to reassure ticket-holders that the night would be made good:
“I haven’t talked to anybody about anything, but don’t throw away your ticket stubs. I’m going to figure something out, okay? Just hold on to them. We’ll figure out how to reschedule. But I’m going to have to cool it for the night. I feel great. I’ll see you again soon. Good night.”
He then hugged each of his bandmates, gave the crowd a thumbs up, and walked off to cheers.
A spokesperson for Bon Jovi confirmed the cause in a statement to Rolling Stone:
“Jon Bon Jovi spoke from stage and told fans he has been battling a sinus infection which led to the show’s early ending. As part of the Bon Jovi residency at Madison Square Garden, Jon has said numerous times that it has been a joy to return to live shows for the band. Updated information will be available shortly.”
No rescheduled date has been announced.
The timing gives the night an added weight. This Madison Square Garden stand is the centerpiece of the “Forever” tour, Bon Jovi‘s first proper run of shows since 2022 and their return after a four-year gap forced by Jon‘s vocal problems.
The frontman underwent vocal cord medialization, a reconstructive procedure, in 2022, and spent the years since rebuilding his voice rather than rushing back. The tour opened at the same venue on July 7.
Speaking to People last month, he sounded like a man who had cleared that hurdle:
“I’m fully recovered,” he said at the time. “It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith.”
He also credited the rest of the band for waiting out his recovery instead of moving on:
“They never doubted [me] and never looked for work or decided to retire. The sacrifices that each one of them have made to be there for me is on a whole ’nother level. They said, ‘No, we’re with you.’ Every day of every rehearsal they were there with me. My love for them has only deepened.”
The show mixed the catalogue staples with newer material. Alongside “It’s My Life” and “Livin’ On A Prayer“, the band worked in songs from 2024’s Forever, including “Legendary” and “Living Proof“.
The Madison Square Garden residency is due to wrap Sunday. After that, Bon Jovi head overseas in late August and September for five stadium dates across Scotland, Ireland and England, closing September 9 at London’s Wembley Stadium — the last of three nights booked there.
