Bon Jovi frontman Jon Bon Jovi has officially announced that he is “fully recovered” following his vocal cord surgery and extensive rehabilitation, marking his return to the live stage after a four-year hiatus. In a new story for People magazine, the rock icon opened up about the difficult recovery process and his readiness to lead the band on their upcoming “Forever” tour.
“I’m fully recovered,” Jon Bon Jovi told People. “It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith.”
The surgery, which involved a procedure known as vocal cord medialization, followed the shocking diagnosis that one of his vocal cords was atrophying. The singer, who has long been a proponent of vocal training and technique, admitted the diagnosis was initially bewildering.
“I’d often joked and said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose was my finger. I never did anything to hurt the cords; I didn’t have any excesses. I’m a trained vocalist. I’ve practiced the craft,” he continued. “So when a doctor had to explain to me that one of the cords was literally atrophying, it was confusing.”
Throughout the long road back to performance-ready condition, Jon Bon Jovi highlighted the steadfast support of his bandmates, keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Hugh McDonald, and guitarist Phil X, as the backbone of his recovery.
“They never doubted [me] and never looked for work or decided to retire. The sacrifices that each one of them have made to be there for me is on a whole ’nother level. They said, ‘No, we’re with you.’ Every day of every rehearsal they were there with me. My love for them has only deepened.”
As the band prepares to kick off the “Forever” tour with a nine-night residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City starting July 7, the frontman reflected on his new outlook regarding live performance and the spiritual bond he shares with his audience.
“It’s not about perfection. It’s about excellence,” he cotinued. “It’s like I have the gift to be able to hold this light. The gift that I receive is being in the reflection of that light when it hits the audience, and that’s what I’ve been working for — I’ve been training to find the ability to hold that light. It’s like this whole spiritual communion between the band and me and the audience.”
The tour arrives on the heels of the band’s 2024 album, Forever, which was produced by Jon Bon Jovi alongside John Shanks. The 12-track record, which features the lead single “Legendary“, will be the focal point of the upcoming shows, which include additional dates across England and Ireland following the New York residency.
