Joe Perry Says Aerosmith Isn’t Done With Live Shows Yet: ‘There Are Certainly Other Options’

Less than two years after Aerosmith officially retired from touring, guitarist Joe Perry has hinted that the legendary rock group might still have a future on stage.

In a recent interview with Billboard, the guitarist discussed the band’s current status and provided an update on frontman Steven Tyler‘s ongoing recovery. The 78-year-old singer fractured his larynx during a September 2023 concert, abruptly halting the band’s planned “Peace Out” farewell tour after just three shows. By August 2024, the group announced their permanent retirement from the road.

Despite stepping away from traditional touring, Joe Perry revealed that the band remains in close contact and is open to alternative live performance possibilities.

“The band is still kind of definitely not in touring mode, but there are certainly other options, so we stay in touch,” he confirmed.

Providing a realistic look at his longtime bandmate’s health, Perry explained the slow, careful rehabilitation process required after such a severe physical setback.

“You just never know,” he said regarding future Aerosmith plans. “It’s just been in the last six months that Steven‘s started to get comfortable with singing; he literally had to take a year off before he was able to start stretching his vocal cords, and you’re always worried about reinjuring it. I learned a long time ago that everything we do is fragile… so we just take it day by day. You hope for the best. You just have to have the confidence and have that vision of positive in front of you. You can’t do it unless you envision it.”

The duo did manage to share a stage recently. On April 30, 2025, they performed together at a private San Francisco benefit concert for Janie’s Fund, an initiative created by Steven Tyler to support young female trauma survivors.

Outside of the Aerosmith camp, both musicians have remained musically active. Last November, the pair collaborated with British artist Yungblud (real name Dominic Harrison) on the five-track EP One More Time. Steven Tyler and Yungblud also appeared together in Birmingham, England, performing at the “Back To The Beginning” tribute concert honoring Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath in July 2025.

Meanwhile, Joe Perry is currently preparing to head overseas this summer. He will tour Europe with the Hollywood Vampires, the rock supergroup featuring Alice Cooper, guitarist Tommy Henriksen, and actor Johnny Depp.
