Renowned drummer Jay Weinberg, formerly of Slipknot and currently wielding the sticks for Suicidal Tendencies, recently stirred conversation in the rock community by anointing a modern-day equivalent to Led Zeppelin. In a candid discussion on the Podioslave Podcast, Weinberg offered profound praise for Clutch, suggesting the Maryland quartet embodies the spirit of the iconic British rock legends for the current generation.

During his appearance on the podcast, Weinberg delved into various aspects of his career, from adapting his drumming style to new bands to his early days playing organized hockey. The conversation naturally shifted to his musical inspirations, where Clutch‘s drummer Jean-Paul Gaster emerged as a significant figure. Weinberg described Gaster as “a mentor to me in ways,” noting their insightful conversations despite infrequent meetings. He commended Gaster‘s continuous dedication to refining his craft and understanding the origins of drumming techniques.

However, it was Weinberg‘s comprehensive admiration for Clutch as a whole that truly resonated. “I think everybody should look to them as an inspiration of how to conduct yourselves as a band,” he asserted. “The same four guys since 1980 whatever, doing inspired music. Doing it on their own terms, releasing it themselves.” He then elevated his commendation further, stating unequivocally, “They’re like our generation’s Led Zeppelin or something like that. Like, gosh, what an incredible band and just like unbelievable players at everything they do.” This bold comparison, made without prompts for elaboration from the hosts, highlights Weinberg‘s deep respect for Clutch‘s enduring influence and artistic integrity.

Beyond his current work with Suicidal Tendencies, Weinberg also provided an update on his personal musical endeavors. He revealed that he has been diligently working on a “solo album,” clarifying that while he is playing all the instruments himself, the project is far from a solitary effort. “I’m collaborating with many different vocalists who I’ve been inspired by,” Weinberg explained, indicating a multifaceted approach to his long-gestating material. This personal venture allows him to explore diverse musical influences, including elements of Neurosis, Interpol, and My Bloody Valentine, which he believes will be more evident in this material than in his previous work.

With Suicidal Tendencies having a brief respite from touring before resuming August dates, Weinberg is dedicating his time to his creative pursuits.
