Jason Momoa, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in “Aquaman” and “Game of Thrones“, has offered insights into his electrifying dive into the mosh pit during Black Sabbath‘s final concert, “Back to the Beginning,” held on July 5 at Villa Park in the band’s hometown of Birmingham. The incident, which saw Momoa briefly step away from his hosting duties to join the crowd, occurred shortly before Pantera took the stage.
In a recent interview with The Independent, filmed prior to the passing of Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne on July 22, Momoa vividly likened his mosh pit experience to surfing. “Moshing at the Black Sabbath finale, it felt like being in big surf,” Momoa reflected. “It’s like a gigantic undertow. You can’t keep your feet up and you’re getting tossed everywhere and and you’re laughing and you’re having the time of your life and you’re literally falling over and people are pulling you up. You know, it’s very hot in England right now, so you’re wet with other people’s sweat.”
The actor also revealed a personal motivation behind his spontaneous plunge into the crowd: his desire to share the intense experience with his son, who was also in attendance. “And I wanted to get my son out there,” he explained. “You want to experience things with your family members and so, for my boy, it was a memorable moment to get out there and do it to Pantera.” Momoa underscored his genuine love for the music, adding, “Ultimately, I’d rather be in the pit with everybody, also because I’m a huge fan. Why the hell do you guys get to have all the fun?”
“Back to the Beginning” served as a monumental tribute to Black Sabbath and particularly to Ozzy Osbourne, who had retired from touring in 2023 due to ongoing health issues. The event featured a star-studded lineup of bands paying homage to the metal pioneers, including Metallica, Gojira, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, and Slayer, alongside Pantera.
This historic concert, promoted as Ozzy Osbourne‘s final time on stage, preceded his death by just 17 days. Osbourne, who was 76, passed away from undisclosed causes. The “Back to the Beginning” event not only celebrated Black Sabbath‘s profound influence on music but also provided a poignant farewell for Ozzy Osbourne, whose final live performance resonated deeply with fans and fellow musicians alike.
