In a new interview, Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie spoke candidly about the reunion with drummer Mike Portnoy, describing it as an emotionally resonant moment for the entire band. LaBrie’s comments offer a clear perspective on the creative differences between Portnoy and his predecessor, Mike Mangini, while celebrating the unique connection that the band’s original lineup shares.
LaBrie was quick to praise Mangini‘s decade-long contribution to the band, acknowledging his formidable talent. “I’ve said it in several interviews. It’s funny. You get away, and Mike Mangini is a phenomenal drummer — he was incredible in the band and that, and he has his style of playing and being involved in the music and the writing and all that stuff,” LaBrie said.
However, the singer noted that Portnoy’s playing style brings a distinct feeling that was immediately noticeable when the band began working on their new album, Parasomnia. The album is their first with Portnoy since 2009. LaBrie explained: “And then coming back to Mike Portnoy, I was just reminded, and we even talked about it while we were writing Parasomnia, and he has a very specific vibe and feel and groove to when he plays.” He added, “And you just feel that, and then you’re reminded and you’re, like, ‘Wow. Yeah. There it is. There it is. That’s exactly what it used to be like.’ And it’s good.”
Portnoy‘s return, which was announced last year after he and the band members repaired their relationship, has been met with widespread excitement from fans. For the band themselves, it was a profound reunion.
According to LaBrie, the experience of having Portnoy back in the fold has a deeper meaning than just a musical collaboration. He summed up the feeling with one powerful statement: “It’s like a coming home — for all of us. For all of us. For sure.”
