Iron Maiden‘s plan to build a cinema release around their Paris show didn’t go as scripted, so the band is taking the film to Knebworth instead. On June 22, as a brutal heatwave pushed temperatures past 40 degrees in the French capital, the metal legends took the stage at La Défense Arena in front of more than 30,000 fans, cameras rolling for a future big-screen release. Supporters had flown in from all corners of the globe for the occasion. Then, roughly fifty minutes into the set and near the end of “Two Minutes To Midnight“, the entire building lost power, dropping the arena into complete silence and darkness.
Electricity was eventually brought back, and the band returned to finish the show about an hour after the outage hit. Police granted an extension to the legal curfew, stretching it to 11:35 p.m. but no further, since Paris public transport shuts down not long after and authorities didn’t want tens of thousands of concertgoers stranded on the streets in the heat. The window let the band close out with “Iron Maiden“, but it cost them their planned trio of encores: “Aces High“, “Fear Of The Dark” and “Wasted Years“.
Rather than leave the film incomplete, the group moved fast and settled on wrapping it up at Knebworth on July 11, where they’ll mark their 50th anniversary tour with Eddfest, billed as a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
Founder and bassist Steve Harris kept it simple: “You all know what happened in Paris, we all know what happened in Paris, so we’re gonna finish it off at Knebworth, and we’ll see you there.”
Frontman Bruce Dickinson followed up with a warning of sorts: “We’re not going to lose what we did in Paris but we’re going to add to it with some amazing stuff from Knebworth. So Knebworth, be on ya best behaviour!!”
Thanks to a burst of quick behind-the-scenes work, Eddfest will now be filmed too, meaning audiences from both the Paris night and the UK event will end up in the finished movie documenting the “Run For Your Lives” production, currently at the halfway mark of its world tour.
Alongside the filming news, the band pulled back the curtain on the on-site Infinite Dreams Museum, offering fans a preview of what’s coming. Built out from last year’s pictorial book, Infinite Dreams, the attraction turns the pages into a dedicated, hands-on experience where visitors can get right up next to the exhibits. Organizers do ask attendees to keep phones pocketed during the show itself, though they’re welcome elsewhere on site.
Among the pieces going on display are the famous pharaoh’s head from the “World Slavery Tour“, Eddie‘s ray-gun from 1986’s “Somewhere On Tour“, the X-Factor electric chair, tank-commander Eddie from the A Matter of Life & Death Tour, the Baphomet from “Number Of The Beast”, the “Phantom of the Opera” organ from the Maiden England tour, and personal keepsakes stretching all the way back to the Paul Di’Anno era. And that, apparently, is only a slice of what’s inside.
Manager Rod Smallwood explained where it all came from: “We’ve raided Eddie’s Archive, Steve’s garden and our very own offices, warehouses and homes to bring you some actual pieces of our history! More than 50 items from almost 50 years of history will be on display for tens of thousands of you to see. Try to be there early, because sadly there likely won’t be time for every one of you to take everything in, especially as we have so many other exciting things happening on site.”
“This weekend is for you, our fans, we are trying to do something special and a bit different in celebration of 50 years– a full on Maiden experience from the moment you arrive on site to the minute you leave. And of course, a very special couple of days for the campers, and I will certainly join them both nights, as I don’t want to miss anything!. So enjoy it, try to get to see and be part of a bit of everything, and I’ll see you in the bar!”
The Eddfest weekend opens Friday afternoon, with camping included across both nights. “Maidenville”, the on-site village built to be the ultimate Iron Maiden hangout, stays open to weekend campers throughout Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s Maidenville program features live sets from former Iron Maiden singer Blaze Bayley, Gypsy’s Kiss and others, while fans can also drop by Eddie‘s Dive Bar, take in the Infinite Dreams Museum Experience, ride the Unfair Funfair with its Eddie-themed games, and browse Eddie‘s Emporium, with plenty of surprises scattered across the grounds.
Saturday-only ticket holders will get access to Maidenville as well, alongside the opening of the Main Arena. Everything builds toward the Saturday main-stage lineup, an impressive run of supporting acts leading into Iron Maiden‘s show-stopping “Run For Your Lives” set.
