The ongoing lineup and management controversies surrounding Cradle of Filth continue to draw attention — and now, an insider report received by Metal Stop sheds light on alleged financial and working conditions for the band’s crew.
According to the report, submitted by someone who covered a festival shift for one of the band’s sound engineers, the band reportedly pays very low rates to staff despite its high-profile status:
“I worked with Cradle of Filth for a one off festival. I was covering for one of their Sound Engineers,” the source said. “I was told they could only pay £150 a day which I thought was very weird considering their status, the fact they were headlining the festival and amount of experience they had. The normal day rate of a Sound Engineer is between £300 and £450 depending on the job and experience.
“The monitor engineer was a very inexperienced young lad too, I was having to tell him what to do with the very poor equipment they had given me to use.
“The band were very lovely and easy to get along with, but you could sense there was a very different balance within the band.
“I feel like I needed to share this with you, it’s not just the band that’s being exploited, it’s the crew too, all too often crew get exploited in the industry, but seeing Dani going on expensive holidays around the world with his girlfriend whilst the others are locked into a contract not being able to work with other artists is absolutely horrific.
“If they all got their fair share of the pie then fair enough, but they’re not, he should pay a fairer wage at least, he’s running a world famous band. He needs to do better.”
This insider report comes amid a series of high-profile departures from the band, including keyboardist and backing vocalist Zoë Marie Federoff and guitarist Marek “Ashok” Šmerda, who cited low pay, stressful conditions, and what they described as a toxic work environment in their statements.
The insider report adds further weight to ongoing concerns over how the band treats both its members and crew. Zoë Marie Federoff, the band’s former keyboardist and backing vocalist, publicly detailed her departure, describing a toxic environment and alleging financial exploitation, abusive management, and extreme stress during her tenure. She revealed that the harsh conditions even affected her personal life, contributing to a miscarriage while on tour.
Shortly after, guitarist Marek “Ashok” Šmerda, who is also Federoff’s husband, announced that he had planned to leave the band following the South American tour, citing low pay, high stress, and what he described as years of unprofessional behavior within management. However, Dani Filth later confirmed that Ashok had been fired immediately, escalating the controversy and leaving the band with a temporary single-guitar setup while a replacement is arranged.
Despite these ongoing controversies, Cradle of Filth is continuing its “Screaming of the Americas” tour across South America. Fans have witnessed the band performing with replacement members and under tense circumstances, but the group remains committed to completing the tour. The insider report underscores that these internal issues extend beyond the musicians to the crew, many of whom are working under restrictive contracts and low pay, unable to take on other projects due to exclusivity clauses.
