Hypocrisy will not be crossing the Atlantic this month. The Swedish death metal veterans announced on Monday (August 3) that their “Mass Hallucination” North American run has been pulled, with visa complications cited as the cause.
The itinerary was days from starting. Hypocrisy were due to open in Toronto on August 10 and finish in Los Angeles on August 23, a twelve-date stretch built around headline club shows and support slots on Dimmu Borgir‘s “Grand Serpent Rising” tour.
Hypocrisy posted the following to social media:
“Due to visa issues beyond our control, we won’t be able to make it to the North American tour.”
“We’re devastated, and truly sorry — we did everything we could.”
“We’re not giving up. We’ll keep working to make this right and get to you as soon as we can!”
“Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support!”
“If you have questions about refunds, please contact your original ticket seller.”
No further detail on the nature of the visa problem was provided, and no rescheduled dates have been named.
Eight of those dates were Dimmu Borgir bills. The remaining four, New York, Omaha, Salt Lake City and San Diego, were Hypocrisy‘s own headline nights, slotted into the gaps.
Dimmu Borgir‘s North American outing is the Norwegian band’s first in that territory since 2018 and supports Grand Serpent Rising, their tenth studio album, issued May 22 through Nuclear Blast. It is their first full-length since 2018’s Eonian.
Dimmu Borgir had not issued a statement regarding the remaining dates at the time Hypocrisy announced the cancellation.
The “Mass Hallucination” campaign has already covered significant ground. Hypocrisy ran the European leg through spring 2026, hitting fifteen countries across the continent and the U.K. with Abbath as special guest, alongside Vomitory and Vreid.
That run was not tied to a new record. Peter Tägtgren and company played career-spanning sets pulled from across the catalogue.
Hypocrisy trace back to the early 1990s and began as a solo undertaking by Peter Tägtgren, who also fronts Pain, ran The Abyss, and spent years as Lindemann‘s guitarist. He cut the first demos alone. An offer from Nuclear Blast prompted him to recruit players and turn the project into a working band.
The catalogue runs twelve albums, from 1992’s Penetralia through The Fourth Dimension, Abducted and Virus to 2021’s Worship, which remains the most recent studio release. That record was tracked and mixed at Tägtgren‘s Abyss Studio in Sweden, mastered by Svante Forsbäck, and given cover art by Blake Armstrong, whose credits include Kataklysm, In Flames and Carnifex.
The current lineup pairs Tägtgren with bassist Mikael Hedlund, a member since 1991. Thomas Elofsson has handled guitar as a session player since 2013, and Henrik Axelsson took over session drum duties in 2022.
