Green Day have been confirmed as part of the opening ceremony for next month’s Super Bowl, bringing the event to their home territory in the Bay Area.

The NFL announced on January 18 that the East Bay punk veterans will take the stage ahead of the February 8 championship game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The performance will feature a medley spanning Green Day’s best-known material, soundtracking a pregame presentation that will also include past Super Bowl MVPs being introduced on the field.

This year’s halftime spectacle will be headlined by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny during the 60th edition of the Super Bowl, a booking that has already sparked vocal backlash from segments of the MAGA-aligned audience. Additional ceremonial performances include Charlie Puth handling the U.S. national anthem, while Brandi Carlile is set to deliver a rendition of “America The Beautiful“.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said: “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard! We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Tim Tubito, senior director of event and game presentation for the NFL, added: “Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX. As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.”

Green Day has received a prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 1st, 2025. The ceremony, celebrating the band’s immense contribution to music and entertainment, saw members Billie Joe ArmstrongMike Dirnt, and Tré Cool honored with the 2,810th star.
