Following their immense success since the 2021 release of Fortitude, French progressive metal band Gojira is preparing to release their highly anticipated eighth studio album. In a recent interview with Le Parisien, drummer Mario Duplantier provided an update on the upcoming album, revealing that it is nearing completion.
Duplantier said the band is making a stylistic return to their roots, stating: “It’s almost finished. We’re going back to big guitar riffs and a more metal, but more modern, sound.” He also spoke candidly about the creative challenges the band has faced, noting that the recording process took longer than initially planned. “There are two more songs to refine. We wanted to move quickly, but we didn’t succeed. We thought about it so much that we almost got lost,” he explained. The drummer added that their standards have evolved over the years, making the process of matching their tastes more difficult than it was earlier in their career. “It’s harder to match our tastes than when we were 20, and that’s normal.” The new album is expected to be released in 2026.
Since the release of Fortitude, Gojira has cemented their status as a major force in the metal world. The band made history as the first metal act to perform at the Olympic opening ceremony, a collaboration that later earned them a GRAMMY Award. They have also toured with major acts like Korn and are scheduled for an upcoming run with Metallica. The band also made a guest appearance at the all-star farewell concert for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath.
Gojira will be busy on the road throughout late 2025 and 2026, with a packed touring schedule that includes headlining shows, festival appearances, and support slots.
