Glenn Danzig has announced a special New Year’s Eve concert. The legendary vocalist is set to bring his acclaimed “Danzig Sings Elvis” showcase to the House of Blues in Anaheim, California, on December 31.
This exclusive performance marks a rare return to the stage for this specific persona; Danzig‘s last dedicated Elvis Presley tribute concert took place nearly three years ago, in February 2023 at the historic Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood.
The show centers around material from his 2020 collection, Danzig Sings Elvis, a passion project that saw the former Misfits and Samhain frontman stripping away the heavy metal distortion to pay homage to the ‘King of Rock and Roll.’ The album features intimate renditions of tracks like “Is It So Strange,” “Loving Arms,” and “One Night.”
In 2020, speaking to Rolling Stone about the recording process, Danzig explained how the project evolved from a modest idea into a full-length release over several years of intermittent recording sessions with guitarist Tommy Victor.
“What happened was, in between doing it, I’ve been working on a million other things. I’m working on other records,” Danzig explained. “It started out as, ‘I’m gonna do a Danzig Sings Elvis EP, and it can be four or five songs.’ And eventually, while doing other records, we’d have downtime and I’d just turn to Tommy [Victor] and say, ‘Let’s do another Elvis track or two.’ He’s like, ‘Okay.’ Eventually, it became an album.”
Danzig was meticulous in his approach to the vocals, particularly on the track “One Night,” aiming to capture the right mood rather than just mimicking the original.
“It’s a great song. There’s a lot of different versions of it that I did while I was in the studio with multiple vocal takes,” he noted. “I did some a little softer, some a little harder. Some in between. The one I decided on is the one I like the best.”
The vocalist’s affinity for Presley is well-documented throughout his discography. Long before the dedicated tribute album, Danzig covered “Trouble” on the 1993 EP Thrall-Demonsweatlive and recorded a version of “Let Yourself Go” for his 2015 covers album, Skeletons.
While Danzig formed his eponymous band in 1987 and last released a studio album of original material with 2017’s Black Laden Crown via Evilive Records/Nuclear Blast Entertainment, this New Year’s Eve event will be strictly a black-leather-and-crooning affair.
