Gibson TV Premieres Epic Docuseries Honoring Tony Iommi: ‘The Godfather Of Heavy Metal’, First Episode Available Online (Video)

Gibson Films is celebrating that monumental legacy with the release of a new limited docuseries, “Iommi: The Godfather Of Heavy Metal”.

Tony Iommi

The history of heavy metal begins with the tips of Tony Iommi’s fingers. From the industrial gloom of Birmingham, England, to the biggest stadiums on Earth, his riffs didn’t just define a genre—they invented it. Now, Gibson Films is celebrating that monumental legacy with the release of a new limited docuseries, “Iommi: The Godfather Of Heavy Metal“.

Volume One of the series is officially streaming worldwide as of today, exclusively via Gibson TV. The project serves as a comprehensive visual biography, tracing Iommi‘s journey from a working-class factory worker to the sonic architect behind Black Sabbath. It explores how his distinct vision and ominous playing style sparked a global cultural movement that continues to resonate today.

For Cesar Gueikian, President and CEO of Gibson, the project is more than just a documentary; it is a necessary tribute to the man who started it all.

Tony Iommi is the godfather of heavy metal — the creator, the sonic architect, the rifflord who started it all. El Padrino, as I like to call him,” says Gueikian. “It’s an incredible honor for all of us at Gibson to pay tribute to Tony with this epic Gibson Films release.”

The series distinguishes itself with a staggering lineup of rock royalty who sat down to discuss Iommi‘s influence. Volume One features in-depth interviews with peers and disciples alike, including Queen‘s Brian May, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Scott Ian, Yungblud, John 5, Philip Anselmo, and Blackie Lawless.

The documentary also includes appearances by Tom Morello and Troy Van Leeuwen, alongside firsthand accounts from fellow Birmingham legends Rob Halford and Justin Broadrick. According to Mark Agnesi, director of brand experience at Gibson, the consensus among these diverse artists was absolute.

“No matter what regional metal scene or sub genre we explored, every artist we interviewed always pointed the finger back to Tony,” adds Agnesi. “He is the Riff Lord!!!!”

The series delves deep into how Iommi‘s innovations reverberated through decades of music history, cementing Black Sabbath as perhaps the most enduring influence in modern rock. Todd Harapiak, media director at Gibson and producer of the series, emphasized that Iommi‘s sound was the bedrock upon which countless other bands built their careers.

Tony Iommi remains the undisputed godfather of heavy metal. Through his iconic riffs and uncompromising vision, he gave birth to a sound that was rooted in darkness and became the foundation for generations of musicians,” continues Harapiak. “It’s been truly remarkable to have so many artists unite for this series and hear how Black Sabbath changed the course of their musical lives. The Godfather Of Heavy Metal not only celebrates the journey of Lord Iommi and Sabbath but also shines a light on the stories of the countless bands who carried their torch forward.”

For the man himself, the outpouring of respect featured in the documentary was a moving experience. Iommi expressed his thanks to both the filmmakers and the peers who contributed to the project.

“I’m very grateful to Gibson for this new documentary series and for honoring my role in the story of heavy metal,” says Tony Iommi. “Hearing the kind words from so many incredible artists is really humbling. Thank you all for telling the story with such heart—and to the fans who’ve kept it alive. Long may it continue!”

“I was Catholic when I put the album on,” says Wylde, speaking on the time when he heard Iommi‘s riffs. “Midway through the album, I became a full-blown Sat*nist. At the end of the record, I converted back to Catholicism so I could thank God for Black Sabbath.”

“I don’t know where Tony’s stuff comes from,” adds May. “Tony is in everybody. He’s the godfather of heavy metal.”

Iommi: The Godfather Of Heavy Metal” will continue to roll out new installments throughout 2026 on Gibson TV.
