Fan-filmed video of former Queensrÿche frontman Geoff Tate‘s entire October 17 concert in Homer, New York, has been released, offering a front-row seat to his “Operation Mindcrime: The Final Chapter” tour. The special run of dates sees the legendary vocalist performing the iconic 1988 concept album in its entirety, a celebration that comes as he is also preparing to release the third and final installment of the rock opera.
The new concert video captures the full, electrifying experience of Tate and his solo band bringing the story of Nikki, Sister Mary, and Dr. X to life. In a recent interview, Tate confirmed that he has a full album’s worth of material ready for the upcoming Operation: Mindcrime III and explained that the writing process was a natural and organic one.
“Well, I don’t know. I just started writing, and it sort of happened,” he said of the new album’s creation. He also detailed a modern, staggered release plan for the new music. “We’re planning to release it in segments — like two songs here, then another two songs, then three songs — and kind of release it in parts,” he explained.
Musically, Tate promised the new material will be a return to the sound of the classic era. “It definitely has a strong early Queensrÿche vibe, with some tracks being super heavy and technical. The album is also deeply emotional, marking the final chapter in the ‘Mindcrime‘ saga,” he said.
When it comes to the immense pressure of adding a third chapter to such a beloved and iconic story, Tate was clear that he is not concerned with fan expectations.
“Am I worried about people’s expectations? No, I’ve never been worried about that,” he stated. “I didn’t worry about it with the first or second one. Why would I start worrying about the third? … Honestly, I don’t care. I don’t write records to make people happy or to impress them. I make them simply to make records. Whether people like them or not doesn’t matter to me.”
The original Operation: Mindcrime is widely regarded as one of the greatest concept albums in heavy metal history, a platinum-selling rock opera that tells the story of a brainwashed assassin.
