Gene Simmons, the legendary bassist and co-founder of KISS, was hospitalized on Tuesday, October 7, following a car crash on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. The 76-year-old musician reportedly lost consciousness while driving, causing his SUV to veer across multiple lanes before colliding with a parked vehicle.
NBC4 Los Angeles identified Simmons as the driver and reported that he told deputies he may have fainted behind the wheel. The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. in the 25000 block of the highway, according to a spokesperson from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. While the spokesperson did not confirm Simmons by name, they stated that the driver was transported to a nearby hospital by LA County Fire personnel for further evaluation.
Simmons’ wife, Shannon Tweed, 68, later confirmed to NBC4 that he is now recovering at home. She also mentioned that his doctors had recently adjusted his medication, which could have played a role in the sudden episode.
The timing of the accident is particularly notable, as Simmons is scheduled to reunite with his bandmates next month for the “KISS Army Storms Vegas” event — a three-day celebration marking the band’s 50th anniversary. The event, running from November 14 to 16, will feature an “unmasked” lineup including Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer, and special guests.
Fans attending the Vegas celebration can expect exclusive Q&A sessions, a panel with longtime manager Doc McGhee, a performance by former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick, and appearances by tribute bands and other guests. It’s the first time the band will perform together since retiring from touring in 2023.
Despite the scare, Simmons appears to be on the mend — and fans can still look forward to seeing the Demon take the stage once more.
