Fully Authorized Biography Of Death’s Chuck Schuldiner Announced

The definitive and fully authorized story of Death founder and “Godfather of Death Metal” Chuck Schuldiner is finally set to be told.

Chuck Schuldiner Death Biography

More than two decades after his untimely death, the definitive and fully authorized story of Death founder and “Godfather of Death Metal” Chuck Schuldiner is finally set to be told. Publisher Decibel Books has announced the upcoming release of “Born Human: The Life and Music of Death’s Chuck Schuldiner“, a new biography that marks the first time the musician’s famously private family has fully participated in telling his story.

The book, scheduled for release in November 2025, promises to be the “accurate and concise chronicle” of the visionary musician’s life and legacy. To create it, Schuldiner‘s family entrusted respected metal journalist David E. Gehlke with what they describe as their “closely guarded family secret.”

“We finally met someone… whom we could entrust with our closely guarded family secret; this being the inspiration to the painful journey of Chuck’s music,” said Schuldiner‘s sister, Beth Welty, in a statement.

Authored by Gehlke (known for “The Scott Burns Sessions” and the official story of Obituary), “Born Human” will feature exclusive interviews and contributions from those who knew Schuldiner best, previously unreleased photographs, and new cover art from legendary metal artist Ed Repka.

Schuldiner‘s nephew, Chris Steele, emphasized the book’s importance as the official document of his uncle’s life. “It is the culmination of different perspectives and experiences, not only from my family and myself, but from Chuck’s friends, bandmates and countless people who were infused into his dynamic journey,” he stated. “Finally, there is an accurate and concise chronicle of the man, brother, uncle, son, partner and trailblazer that was Chuck Schuldiner.”

A true visionary, Chuck Schuldiner is one of the most influential figures in the history of heavy metal. He channeled a tragic childhood into music that was at once brutal and technical, melodic and progressive, establishing his band, Death, as a pioneering force in the underground. His uncompromising artistic vision was often accompanied by a tumultuous relationship with the industry and a revolving door of bandmates. Just as he found personal peace, he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 1999 and passed away in 2001 after a remarkable fight.

At nearly 500 pages, “Born Human” is poised to be an essential document for metal history, finally offering an authorized, in-depth look into the life of one of its most innovative and tragically short-lived geniuses. Pre-orders for the November 2025 release are available now.
