Dave Lombardo drums on “Revolution.exe“, a new single with Tyler Bates and British synthwave band Gunship.
Dave Lombardo has played drums on “Revolution.exe“, a new track from film composer and producer Tyler Bates and British synthwave band Gunship. It is the first release on Bates‘ own label, Gravel And Echo Recordings.
The song sets Gunship‘s retro-futurist synth work against a hard rock and electronic base, with lyrics aimed at power, control and complacency. A lyric video is out through Gunship‘s channel, built in a jittery retro computer style and taking in an homage to Francisco Goya‘s Saturn Devouring His Son.
Bates and Gunship had worked together before, on a track for the DC Comics soundtrack album Dark Nights: Death Metal.
“My history with Gunship began a few years ago when we wrote ‘Berserker‘ for the Dark Nights Death Metal album,” Bates said. “‘Revolution.exe‘ picks up where we left off. Dave Lombardo‘s drumming is pure fire. This song is a banger. I hope y’all love it!”
The three parties never shared a room. Bates and Gunship wrote and produced remotely across time zones, with Robert Carranza mixing and Stefan Brown mastering at Abbey Road Studios. Bates has indicated more solo work and production is planned through the label.
Bates has been scoring films for more than three decades, working with directors including Chad Stahelski, Zack Snyder, Ti West, Genndy Tartakovsky and James Gunn on projects such as “John Wick“, “Atomic Blonde“, “Guardians Of The Galaxy“, “Deadpool 2” and Rob Zombie‘s “The Devil’s Rejects“.
On the music side he has worked with Evanescence, Jerry Cantrell, Alexis Krauss, Mastodon, Bush and In This Moment. He also co-wrote and co-produced four Marilyn Manson albums, beginning with 2015’s The Pale Emperor and continuing through this year’s One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2, and toured with him as a guitarist, the two having met through Bates‘ work on the Showtime series Californication.
Lombardo was born in Havana and moved to Los Angeles as a small child. He took up drums in his teens and co-founded Slayer in 1981, going on to appear on more than 100 recordings. Rolling Stone placed him on its list of the 100 greatest drummers of all time, Modern Drummer has called him the king, and Drummerworld the godfather of double bass.
His playing runs through Grip Inc., Fantômas, Suicidal Tendencies, Venamoris, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Testament, Empire State Bastard, Dead Cross and work with John Zorn. He has been busy this month beyond this single: “Paleomagnetic Resonance“, made with Lustmord under the name Lustmord Lombardo, appeared on 11 August, and Satanic Planet, his project with Dead Cross bandmates, signed to Relapse Records in April.
His Slayer tenure ended in 2013 after a contract dispute with the rest of the band led to him sitting out their Australian dates that February and March. Paul Bostaph, who had drummed for the group between 1992 and 2001, replaced him and holds the seat today.
