Geoff Tate, the iconic voice formerly of Queensrÿche, is preparing to bid a definitive farewell to one of progressive metal’s most revered works. He has unveiled the 2026 U.S. leg of his “Operation: Mindcrime – The Final Chapter” tour, which will mark the absolute last time the classic album, Operation: Mindcrime, is performed in its entirety.
This upcoming tour builds on the success of 2025 dates, revisiting some cities and introducing new stops across the United States. A recent announcement from Tate’s social media emphasized the unique nature of these performances: “This will be your last chance ever to witness Geoff and the band perform the entire Operation: Mindcrime album live — and in 2026, we’re taking it to the next level with a full string ensemble and an epic laser light show!”
The original Operation: Mindcrime, released by Queensrÿche in May 1988, is widely considered a landmark in concept albums. It masterfully intertwines themes of political corruption, dr*g addiction, and revolution through the narrative of Nikki, a disillusioned addict ensnared by the enigmatic Dr. X (voiced by the late Anthony Valentine). Nikki‘s path as an assassin is complicated by his bond with Sister Mary, ultimately leading him to confront the dark truths of his manipulation. The album’s enduring relevance is underscored by its platinum certification in 1991 and consistent recognition in “Top Metal Album” lists by publications like Kerrang!, Billboard, and Rolling Stone, with Rolling Stone noting its “eerily relevant” themes decades later.
While the 2006 sequel, Operation: Mindcrime II, received mixed reactions, Tate has confirmed plans for a third and final chapter to the saga, Operation: Mindcrime III. In a November 2024 interview with “Rock Of Nations With Dave Kinchen And Shane McEachern,” Tate shed light on the musical and lyrical direction of his new solo material.
“I would say it has more of an early Queensrÿche feel,” Tate revealed, hinting at a return to form for fans of his earlier work. He elaborated on the compositions: “[The new songs are] super heavy, and some of ’em are incredibly technical. They’re like algebra. [Laughs] You need a calculator when you’re listening to the song. [Laughs] And, of course, some of them are very emotional.”
The new album will serve as “the last chapter in the ‘Mindcrime‘ series,” continuing the story of Dr. X, Nikki, and Sister Mary from a specific point in their journey. Tate expressed immense satisfaction with the progress, stating, “I am just in love with it. I am so happy with everything so far, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.” He also confirmed the continued presence of political undertones, suggesting that listeners “will be able to detect little bits of what’s happening around them.” When pressed on whether a familiar voice would return as Dr. X, Tate remained coy, playfully replying, “I can’t tell you, actually. But thanks for asking. [Laughs]”
