Cradle of Filth are currently embroiled in a legal dispute with two of their former members, Zoë Marie Federoff and Marek “Ashok” Šmerda. The couple, who left the band in August 2025 under tense circumstances, have now filed an official complaint against the group and frontman Dani Filth. The complaint alleges financial exploitation, a hostile work environment, and emotional mistreatment, marking a serious escalation in an already high-profile conflict.
Federoff’s departure on August 24, 2025, came during the band’s tour, citing personal reasons. Days later, Šmerda announced he was leaving as well, pointing to “low pay,” “high stress,” and “years of unprofessional behavior” from the band’s management. The situation quickly became public when Dani Filth claimed Šmerda had been fired and accused the couple of spreading defamatory statements.
Rejecting Filth’s account, Federoff and Šmerda issued a joint statement affirming their claims. They described Cradle of Filth’s management—headed by Devildriver and Coal Chamber frontman Bradley “Dez” Fafara—as manipulative and dishonest, alleging that Dani Filth both enabled and benefited from the mistreatment.
Federoff confirmed via social media that the formal complaint had been filed, stating: “We have filed a complaint to begin formal legal proceedings. We believe, support, and stand by everything in this complaint. We encourage you to read the complaint to fully understand our position, and we have no other statement on it at this time.” She also shared the full complaint online for public access (click here).
At the heart of the dispute is a contract Federoff and Šmerda claim was exploitative. According to their allegations, the contract offered only a 25% raise—the first in seven years—while demanding exclusivity and failing to cover basic living expenses. Their lawyer reportedly described it as “the most psychopathic contract a session musician could ever be handed.”
In response, Dani Filth issued a “final statement” denying all allegations of theft and exploitation. He expressed regret over sharing personal details publicly and emphasized the band’s dedication to transparency and professionalism. Filth also referenced his mother’s battle with stage 4 cancer, urging compassion: “Dragging families into this storm is a cruelty none of us should wish on another.”
Despite the controversy, Cradle of Filth confirmed that their tour would continue, with a focus on ensuring a stronger and more supportive environment for their musicians moving forward.
