The extreme metal world is mourning Roger “B. War” Svensson, the former Marduk bassist whose playing helped define a landmark era of Swedish black metal. He was 60. Known across the underground by the nicknames “Bogge” and “B. War,” Svensson died on July 4, 2026.
Marduk were among the first to confirm the news, sharing a statement from founding guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson:
“Comradeship Through Blood and Iron. It is with the deepest regret that we announce the passing of our former bass player, friend and comrade, Roger ‘Bogge’ Svensson (1965–2026), better known as B. War… The memories remain. Evig är de dödas ryktbarhet. /Morgan and Marduk.”

Born on November 5, 1965, Svensson built a career that stretched across more than three decades of the Swedish extreme metal scene, working not only as a bassist but also as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. His name became inseparable from Marduk, where he held down the low end from 1992 to 2004 — his longest and most celebrated run. Over those years he played on a string of releases now regarded as cornerstones of the genre, among them Those Of The Unlight (1993), Opus Nocturne (1994), Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered, Nightwing and Panzer Division Marduk, helping cement the band’s ferocious sound and its war-driven imagery.
Beyond Marduk, Svensson lent his talents to a number of other projects throughout his career, including Allegiance, Devils Whorehouse and Outland.
Tributes have spread across the scene in the days since his death. Fellow black metal act Enthroned remembered him as “a force to be reckoned with” and a friend and supporter of more than 30 years, extending their condolences to his loved ones.
