In a significant development within the hardcore metal community, Chris Beattie, a founding member and the long-serving bassist for Hatebreed, has initiated legal action against the band. The lawsuit, filed in Connecticut Superior Court, alleges that Beattie was unjustly removed from the band last November, following decades of dedicated service. The complaint, which has been obtained and reported by major media outlets including Billboard and Blabbermouth, specifically targets frontman Jamey Jasta, accusing him of increasingly erratic behavior and a lack of financial transparency.
Beattie‘s legal filing asserts that, for years, Hatebreed operated under an unspoken agreement where he, Jasta, and drummer Matt Byrne were considered equal co-owners. The bassist claims he was a crucial creative and managerial force behind the band’s success. Furthermore, Beattie contends that a 2015 agreement granted him 25% of the band’s merchandise revenue, a deal he alleges was later undermined without his consent or a clear explanation.
The lawsuit paints a picture of a deteriorating relationship within the band, marked by rising tension and a breakdown in communication. Beattie claims that Jasta became secretive with financial records and provided no satisfactory explanation for a noticeable decrease in his payments during 2023 and 2024. His repeated requests for clarity on the financial situation, he says, were met with silence.
The tipping point, according to Beattie, occurred after a November 2024 show in Connecticut. He alleges a security guard at the event falsely accused him of harassment after mistaking him for someone else. The lawsuit claims that Jasta seized on this unsubstantiated accusation as a pretext to abruptly fire Beattie from the band.
In addition to wrongful termination, the lawsuit also alleges that Hatebreed has continued to use Beattie‘s likeness in promotional materials and on merchandise, even months after his departure, without his permission.
Seeking both compensatory and emotional damages, Beattie’s complaint states that his firing has caused significant harm to his career, reputation, and mental health.
