Jello Biafra, the 67-year-old punk rock pioneer and former vocalist of the Dead Kennedys, has been hospitalized after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke.
As a direct result of the medical emergency, the musician has officially canceled all of his previously announced solo tour dates.
According to a public statement released on March 9 by his independent record label, Alternative Tentacles, the stroke occurred on Saturday, March 7, and was caused by high blood pressure.
Detailing the onset of the medical episode in a social media update, Jello shared his firsthand account:
“I hopped out of my bed because I needed to pee, and my left leg just collapsed under me and I fell to the floor. I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it wasn’t working either. I tried to hop back up again, and I couldn’t. I realized I had ‘fallen and I can’t get up!'”
The vocalist continued, describing the moment of realization:
“It was this point I thought, ‘Oh s**t, I’m having a stroke!’ I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta rehabbing to do.”
Representatives from Alternative Tentacles have confirmed that Biafra is currently in stable condition. The label expressed gratitude that the singer is receiving the necessary medical care and stated that further updates will be provided as his rehabilitation progresses.
In a recent statement to Stereogum, Biafra sharply criticized his former bandmates for going ahead with their scheduled appearance at the 2026 Punk in the Park rather than withdrawing following the controversy surrounding the event’s promoter, Cameron Collins, and his financial contributions to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
“They’re taking the money $$$, and THEN pulling out? The real Dead Kennedys would never have let this happen in the first place. One more sordid reason I don’t ever want to play with them again.”
Shortly after, the entire 2026 schedule for the Punk In The Park traveling festival has been officially canceled.
Emerging in the late 1970s, Jello Biafra became a defining voice in American hardcore punk. Following the eventual dissolution of the Dead Kennedys, he spent the next 40 years expanding his career across various creative and political avenues. In 1979, he founded Alternative Tentacles, a label that has since released over 500 records and played a crucial role in the underground music scene.
Throughout his extensive career, the frontman has collaborated with a diverse array of artists and groups. His musical resume includes work with Napalm Death, Nomeansno, DOA, Reverend Horton Heat, Melvins, Ice-T, and Revolting C*cks. He notably contributed to the Sepultura track “Biotech Is Godzilla” and formed the industrial project Lard alongside Ministry‘s Al Jourgensen. Additionally, he established The No WTO Combo, a project featuring Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, Sweet 75), Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), and Gina Mainwal (Sweet 75).
Beyond music, Jello Biafra has remained a prominent activist, spoken-word performer, and political figure. His endeavors include running for mayor of San Francisco, pursuing the Green Party nomination for the United States presidency twice, and contributing written work to the Yoko Ono-compiled book “Memories Of John Lennon.”
