Belphegor frontman and co-founder Helmuth has paid tribute to former bandmate and longtime friend Bartholomäus “Barth” Resch, who reportedly died last month as the result of an automobile accident. Resch was 49 years old.
The Austrian musician was part of Belphegor between 2002 and 2006, a period that saw the band release several notable records. He performed on Lucifer Incestus (2003), Goatreich – Fleshcult (2005), and Pestapokalypse VI (2006), helping shape the group’s signature blend of blackened death metal. Even after leaving the band, his influence remained present through lyrical contributions that later appeared on Bondage Goat Zombie (2008) and Walpurgis Rites – Hexenwahn (2009).
Reacting to the loss, Helmuth shared a heartfelt message honoring both Resch‘s musical legacy and the friendship they maintained for nearly three decades.
Helmuth wrote in a message posted on Belphegor‘s social media channels: “29 years of loyal brotherhood – what a magnificent and chaotic path we marched together. What a tragedy. You still had so many visions for the future, Herr Goaßbock.
“I am devastated by your passing. You leave a huge void, and even that is an understatement. In 2011, you saved my life, Barth.
“Thank you for bringing so much color, passion and fire into the years we shared. Thousands of memories, my friend. I swear we shall meet again. I love you Brother!
“Pactum in Aeternum – may your spirit roam free and unbound!”
The metal community has begun paying its respects to Resch, whose contributions remain a part of some of Belphegor‘s most celebrated releases.
