In a new interview, Duane Trucks, drummer for Brent Hinds‘ side-project Fiend Without A Face, has revealed that the late Mastodon guitarist had a “whole album of tunes” that remains unreleased. Speaking with Metal Hammer, Trucks praised the quality of the unheard solo material.
The revelation provides a new, poignant layer to the legacy of the guitarist, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on August 20 at the age of 51.
“Brent’s got an entire album that hasn’t seen the light of day,” Trucks told the magazine. “He sent me the whole album of tunes and it’s cool as s**t.”
Trucks, who collaborated closely with Hinds in the psychobilly project, also used the interview to reflect on his friend’s unique and uncompromising artistic nature, a quality he said was increasingly rare.
“You rarely meet someone with so many facets who does things in such an honest, vulnerable way,” Trucks said. “He really f**king meant what he was playing. It was not a put-on. He wasn’t just doing this for a cheque.”
Hinds founded Fiend Without A Face in 1998, two years before he joined Mastodon and went on to international success, eventually winning a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2018. Despite his success with Mastodon, he continued to release music with his side project, dropping albums in 2011 and 2017.
The guitarist parted ways with Mastodon in March 2025. Following his death in August, Mastodon released a statement saying they were “heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.” The band has since recruited new guitarist Nick Johnston, who is confirmed to be involved in the writing process for their next album.
