Acclaimed drummer Josh Freese has revealed he was unexpectedly let go from Foo Fighters earlier this week, after serving as the band’s drummer for nearly two years following the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins. In a candid social media post, Freese shared that he was given no specific reason for the decision.
The veteran musician, known for his extensive work with a multitude of high-profile artists, shared the news and his reaction in a full statement on Monday night, May 12, 2025:
“The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given. : (
“Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.
“In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.
“Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters‘ list.”
Josh Freese was officially unveiled as Foo Fighters‘ new touring drummer on May 21, 2023, during their “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts” livestream event. His introduction followed a series of comedic cameos from other famous drummers like Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe, and Danny Carey of Tool. Freese, a highly respected figure in the music industry, has an extensive discography, having played with artists such as Guns N’ Roses, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Paramore, Sting, and The Vandals, among many others, contributing to over 300 recordings.
Foo Fighters have not yet issued an official statement regarding Freese‘s departure or the reasons behind the change in drummers. The band had previously announced their first concert since taking a hiatus, scheduled for October 2025 in Singapore, which will now presumably feature a new, yet-to-be-named drummer.
