In a surprising move that doubles as a historical nod, Foo Fighters have released their first new music since 2023’s But Here We Are, unveiling an 80-second cover of Minor Threat‘s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It.” What makes this release particularly compelling is its unique production lineage: the instrumentals for the track were recorded in 1995, the very year Foo Fighters burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album, while Dave Grohl‘s vocals were added just this year, in 2025. This release strategically coincides with the upcoming 30th anniversary of that seminal debut.
The choice of Minor Threat is no random selection, deeply rooted in Dave Grohl‘s punk and hardcore origins. Before his global fame with Nirvana and later Foo Fighters, Grohl worked his skills in the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, notably with his pre-Nirvana band Scream. Their music was released through Dischord Records, the influential label co-founded by Minor Threat‘s own Ian MacKaye, underscoring the authentic connection to this foundational punk act.
This new music signals Foo Fighters’ return to the public eye after a period out of the spotlight, which included Dave Grohl‘s personal announcement in August 2024. The band has already confirmed a series of highly anticipated international live performances later this year, marking their first shows since August 2024.
Adding to the anticipation surrounding their return is the recent revelation in May that drummer Josh Freese had departed from the group. As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding who will fill the drum stool for these upcoming shows, leaving fans eager for details as the tour dates approach.
