As Foo Fighters embark on their 30th anniversary year, the iconic rock band has unveiled the first new original music since their critically acclaimed 2023 album, But Here We Are. The release of “Today’s Song” on July 2nd, 2025, serves as a poignant opening to this milestone chapter, encapsulating both the band’s enduring spirit and its deep sense of history.
“Today’s Song” arrives as an immediate anthem, brimming with the characteristic Foo Fighters blend of raw energy and melodic power. From its understated, evocative intro to its soaring, optimistic crescendos, the track unfolds as a dynamic journey. Lyrically, it delves into themes of personal growth and the resilience required to face life’s inherent uncertainties and the relentless march of time, solidifying its place as a compelling three-minute-fifteen-second epic within the band’s expansive catalog. The single’s artwork features a personal touch, designed by Harper Grohl.
Accompanying the new music is a heartfelt message from Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, reflecting on the extraordinary three decades the band has shared with its fans and members, past and present. Grohl‘s note paints a vivid picture of a journey marked by profound highs and lows.
Grohl wrote: “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
In a testament to the band’s evolution, Grohl extended his gratitude to former members William Goldsmith, Franz Stahl, and Josh Freese, acknowledging their vital contributions to the Foo Fighters’ story. He underscored their impact, stating, “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
The message then transitioned to a deeply moving tribute to the late drummer Taylor Hawkins, whose presence continues to profoundly shape the band. Grohl‘s words conveyed the immense loss still felt, coupled with an unwavering sense of Hawkins‘s enduring spirit.
Grohl penned: “Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. FOO FIGHTERS will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.” The full message is available on Foo Fighters’ official website.
This new single and reflection are part of Foo Fighters’ broader #FF30 anniversary celebration. Earlier this week, the band released a dynamic cover of Minor Threat‘s 1981 hardcore classic, “I Don’t Wanna Hear It,” further showcasing their diverse influences and long-standing impact on the music scene.
The current lineup of Foo Fighters consists of Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. Fans can look forward to seeing the band live internationally later this year, with upcoming shows confirmed for October in Jakarta, Singapore, Tokyo, and Osaka, followed by a performance in Mexico City in November.
