The mystery behind President’s masked frontman may have just cracked—thanks to a pair of bracelets.
Ever since the band emerged onto the scene with a brooding sound and anonymous aesthetic, speculation has been rampant about the identity of their vocalist. The strongest theory? That none other than Charlie Simpson—frontman of Fightstar and member of pop-rock mainstays Busted—is the voice behind the mask. Now, fans believe they’ve found the most convincing clue to date.
During President’s high-profile debut at the Download Festival on June 15th, eagle-eyed attendees and online sleuths noticed something familiar adorning the singer’s wrists: a set of bracelets that look nearly identical to ones Simpson has been photographed wearing on numerous occasions. While seemingly minor, this detail has reignited debate among fans, many of whom see it as the clearest sign yet that the long-standing rumor is true.
The band themselves have done little to quell the speculation—in fact, they may have stoked it. In the recent music video for their single “Fearless,” President appeared to dramatically unmask their singer, only to leave viewers unsure whether the reveal was genuine or yet another carefully orchestrated piece of misdirection. Given the band’s penchant for mystery and marketing tactics reminiscent of fellow masked act Sleep Token, it’s entirely possible the ambiguity is by design.
Adding to the intrigue, some fans claim to have spotted members of Simpson’s family watching from the side of the stage at Download, which only deepens the theory’s credibility in the eyes of believers.
Still, no official statement has been made by the band or Simpson himself. President’s next live appearance is set for July 30th at The Garage in London, where they’ll be joined by synth-rock duo Zetra. Whether the masks finally come off—or the guessing game continues—is anyone’s guess.
