Bay Area thrash pioneers Exodus have dropped a potent new release, tackling the Scorpions‘ 1977 track “He’s A Woman – She’s A Man“. This thrash-infused interpretation features a guest vocal performance from Death Angel frontman Mark Osegueda, adding another layer of Bay Area metal synergy to the project.
The cover arrives as Exodus gears up for significant activity, including upcoming 40th-anniversary shows celebrating their seminal album Bonded By Blood.
Guitarist Gary Holt elaborated on the choice and collaboration:
“We decided to cover one of our favorite bands of all time a ways back and have been sitting on it until now, and even better, the one and only Mark Osegueda of Death Angel/Kerry King collabed with us to sing it, and he crushes it! He is the only guy we knew who could do Klaus Meine justice. Hope you dig it!”
This musical unveiling follows a major recent development within the Exodus camp. Earlier this year, on January 15th, the band announced they had parted ways with long-time vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza and were reuniting with his predecessor, Rob Dukes. The band expressed gratitude for Souza‘s contributions while conveying excitement for Dukes‘ return to front the group.
Dukes officially marked his return to the stage with Exodus on April 5th at the Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest in Philadelphia, playing his first full concert with the band in nearly 11 years.
The vocalist position in Exodus has seen notable changes over the decades. Souza initially fronted the band from 1986 until their 1993 hiatus, and again from 2002 to 2004. Dukes joined in 2005 following Souza‘s second departure, recording four studio albums with the band: Shovel Headed Kill Machine (2005), The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit A (2007), the Bonded By Blood re-recording Let There Be Blood (2008), and Exhibit B: The Human Condition (2010). Souza then rejoined Exodus in 2014, replacing Dukes, and remained until the recent split announced in January.
Exodus‘s last studio album, Persona Non Grata, was released in November 2021. While often discussed outside the traditional “Big Four” of thrash, their 1985 debut Bonded By Blood remains a landmark release, widely credited with influencing countless bands, including fellow Bay Area titans Testament, Death Angel, and Vio-lence, and is considered a cornerstone of the thrash metal genre.
With Dukes back at the helm, a classic cover unleashed, and reports indicating a pair of new albums are in the works, Exodus is poised to bring their formidable energy back to the stage. The band will soon launch a US tour supported by Havok and Misfire, leading directly into several high-profile festival appearances.
