The band project led by former Fear Factory member Christian Olde Wolbers has changed its name from Angst Fabrik to Machines Of Hate.
The switch became clear after the project’s social media account briefly disappeared earlier this month. It has since returned on Instagram under the new name, with a bio that describes Machines Of Hate as a “working title”. The account now lists Wolbers and former Fear Factory drummer Raymond Herrera as confirmed members.
The new name also has a direct link to Fear Factory‘s history. “Machines Of Hate” was the title of a remix of “Self Bias Resistor” that appeared on Remanufacture, the band’s 1997 remix album based on 1995’s Demanufacture. The phrase is also part of the lyrics of the original song.
The name change comes only weeks after the project revealed that Herrera had come out of retirement from drumming to record parts in the studio. The news led Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares to post a video spoofing the announcement. A few days after the post about Herrera was shared, the Angst Fabrik account went offline before reappearing under its new name.
Wolbers first announced Angst Fabrik in February 2025. As the name is German for “fear factory”, many fans saw the project as a rival to his former band. Cazares responded at the time by pointing out that he had joked about the same name back in 2020.
Some fans had hoped the project would bring together several former Fear Factory members, especially after Wolbers and ex-vocalist Burton C. Bell were seen together in January 2025. Bell later distanced himself from the project in April of that year.
Wolbers, Herrera, Bell and Cazares were part of Fear Factory‘s best-known line-up in the 1990s. When Bell and Cazares reunited in 2009 without Herrera and Wolbers, it led to years of legal disputes between the former bandmates over the rights to the Fear Factory name.
Cazares holds the legal rights to the Fear Factory name and has rebuilt the band since Bell announced his departure in September 2020. The band’s disputes over the years have repeatedly ended up in litigation.
Cazares is the only remaining member from the band’s classic period. He is now joined by singer Milo Silvestro, announced in February 2023, drummer Pete Webber and bassist Tony Campos.
That lineup made its recorded debut on “Roboticist“, released on August 29 through Nuclear Blast. Produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Damien Rainaud, it came with a video by director Vicente Cordero and was the band’s first new music in five years. An early instrumental version had surfaced in 2023 as a demonstration for a guitar plugin before being reworked.
The song precedes the band’s eleventh studio album, their first without Bell. Release plans for it have not been announced. Fear Factory are currently on the road, having opened their European and UK run in Poznań on the day the single came out, with a US tour set for November.
